Fish Audio vs ElevenLabs for Chinese Voiceover

Fish Audio vs ElevenLabs depends on what you weigh most. Fish Audio has a Simplified Chinese site, its docs let you pin Chinese pronunciation with tone-numbered pinyin, and its performance directions can be written in Chinese; its community library holds more than 2 million voices, and the Plus plan costs $15 a month for about 200 minutes, per its pricing page. ElevenLabs starts cheaper (Starter at $6 a month), its v4 model covers 90+ languages, its library has 20,000+ voices, and its Audiobooks and Studio products detect characters in a multi-speaker manuscript and assign voices. Both bill in US dollars, neither lists Alipay or WeChat Pay, and neither says whether it can be used directly from mainland China. Below we compare only what the official sites state and what you can reproduce yourself; we don't score Chinese quality.

The short answer

The difference between Fish Audio and ElevenLabs: who each one suits

Start with what they share: both are general AI voice platforms with text to speech, voice cloning and an API. They differ in how Chinese pronunciation is controlled, where the voices come from, how they charge, and whether you or the tool assigns voices in a multi-character script.

Summary from both official sites and docs, checked November 2026.

Most Fish Audio vs ElevenLabs comparisons online argue about which sounds more human. That is hard to reproduce: the same Chinese line comes out differently with another voice, another model or another way of marking it up. This page compares only what the official sites and docs state, and gives you a short Chinese test script to run on both and judge by ear.

Chinese voiceover

Fish Audio Chinese voice vs ElevenLabs: differences you can reproduce

There is no single answer to which handles Chinese better, but the two do give you different controls for Chinese.

Pronunciation: pinyin vs IPA

Fish Audio's docs say you can replace a Chinese character or syllable with tone-numbered pinyin to fix its reading, and it has separate text-normalization rules for Simplified (zh-CN) and Traditional (zh-TW) Chinese that handle numbers and dates. ElevenLabs' pronunciation dictionaries accept IPA and CMU notation, and using them for languages other than English requires the v3, v4 or v4 Turbo model; the pages we read don't mention pinyin. Chinese drama scripts are full of polyphonic words like 行长, 重来 and 长大, so this is worth testing.

Emotion: different tag styles

Fish Audio's homepage lists tags such as [angry], [sad], [whispering], [sobbing], [sighing] and [pause]; its newer Drama 3 model also takes a plain-language description of the delivery, and the docs say directions can be in English or your own language, with a Chinese example meaning "as if holding back tears while forcing a smile". ElevenLabs uses Audio Tags such as [whispers], [hesitant], [excited] and [laughs], written into the script.

Voices: community library vs curated library

Most of Fish Audio's 2 million-plus voices are uploaded by users, and the Story Studio templates on its Chinese site come with Chinese voices; but the pricing page says paid users may use verified voices that they own commercially, so check the rights before using someone else's upload in a commercial drama. ElevenLabs' library has 20,000+ voices, and its language list includes Chinese and Mandarin Chinese.

顾沉(压低声音):别出声,他们就在门外。 (Gu Chen, low: Quiet. They're right outside.)Whisper volume and breathiness

Pricing

Fish Audio vs ElevenLabs pricing: which is cheaper?

On price alone, Fish Audio vs ElevenLabs depends on volume: ElevenLabs has the lower entry price, while Fish Audio's Plus plan gives more minutes per month by each site's own numbers.

Fish Audio minutes are quoted from its pricing page (about 600–625 credits a minute); ElevenLabs minutes are converted from its "about 1,000 credits produce one minute of audio", for estimates only.
PlanMonthly price (2026-11)Monthly allowanceMinutes, by the site's own measure
Fish Audio Free$08,000 credits, 500 characters per jobAbout 7
Fish Audio Plus$15250,000 credits, 15,000 characters per jobAbout 200
Fish Audio Pro$1002,000,000 credits, 3 team seatsAbout 1,620
ElevenLabs Free$010,000 creditsAbout 10
ElevenLabs Starter$630,000 creditsAbout 30
ElevenLabs Creator$22121,000 creditsAbout 121
ElevenLabs Pro$99600,000 creditsAbout 600

Offers change often: on the day we checked, Fish Audio's English pricing page showed 50% off the first month and ElevenLabs offered Starter at $1 for the first month. For yearly billing, Fish Audio says you save at least 25%, and ElevenLabs charges ten months for a year. Fish Audio also says credits reset monthly and unused credits do not roll over.

Fish Audio's API is billed separately, pay as you go: s2.1-pro costs $15 per million UTF-8 bytes, and s2.1-pro-free is free within fair-use limits. In UTF-8 a Chinese character usually takes 3 bytes, so with byte-based billing the same number of Chinese characters uses more than English text would. Our own prices are not quoted here; see the pricing page.

Using it from China

Can Fish Audio be used in China? Access, sign-up and payment

Fish Audio has a Simplified Chinese site (fish.audio/zh-CN) with Chinese interface text, templates and FAQ, and its footer names Hanabi AI Inc. Its terms' export-control section mentions only US-embargoed countries and restricted-party lists, not China; but whether it can be accessed or signed up for directly from mainland China is not disclosed, and real-world speed and stability depend on your network. ElevenLabs is similar: it has Simplified Chinese pages, its terms' restricted regions don't list China, and direct use from China is likewise not disclosed; see the ElevenLabs alternative.

Payment is the more practical barrier. Fish Audio's pricing page says it takes Visa, Mastercard, American Express and other credit and debit cards, plus "various regional payment methods" without naming them, so Alipay and WeChat Pay are not disclosed; ElevenLabs lists only credit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Creators without a foreign-currency card should check the checkout page before committing.

Voice cloning

Which is better for voice cloning? Rights first, quality second

Both can clone. Fish Audio's cloning page says ten seconds of clean speech is enough, the cloned voice can speak 13 languages zero-shot, and paid plans include commercial rights; ElevenLabs' Instant Voice Cloning starts at Starter and Professional Voice Cloning at Creator. Quality depends heavily on the sample, so clone the same 30-second clean recording on both rather than trusting reviews.

Before cloning anyone else's voice

Fish Audio's FAQ says you are responsible for securing the rights, consent and disclosure needed to clone a voice, and that it does not pre-approve use cases; ElevenLabs' use is governed by its terms of use and prohibited use policy. Publishing in China also falls under the AI-generated content labeling rules in force since 1 September 2025. Get written permission before cloning an actor or a friend; see the commercial use guide and AIGC labeling.

For Chinese short dramas

For Chinese short dramas, there is a third question: the script workflow

Once you have settled Fish Audio vs ElevenLabs, a Chinese short drama raises one more question: both read the text you give them, so the "character: line" format, narration and inner voice have to be split by you, with a voice picked for each role (ElevenLabs Audiobooks and Studio can assign them; in Fish Audio's Story Studio you choose); for Thai or Vietnamese versions you also need a translation in each language first. AI Drama Voice turns that part into a ready workflow: paste a Chinese script, get a cast list, an emotion on every line, line-by-line rewriting into local speech for the languages you tick, the same cast voicing all nine languages, and MP3 plus SRT for each.

  • What we don't do: voice cloning, a public API, letting users choose the model, or a pronunciation dictionary
  • We cover nine languages only: Chinese, English, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean
  • What we add: automatic casting of Chinese scripts, an emotion per line, built-in translation, one SRT per language, Alipay and WeChat Pay

Disclosure

AI Drama Voice calls speech models through a third-party API provider: Google's Gemini TTS by default, plus ElevenLabs' Turbo 2.5 and v3 models. It does not use Fish Audio. AI Drama Voice has no partnership or reseller relationship with Fish Audio or ElevenLabs.

How to choose

Fish Audio vs ElevenLabs by use case

Both have free allowances. Try the one that fits your case first and switch if it doesn't work out.

  1. Chinese narration where readings must be exact

Try Fish Audio first: pinyin readings and Chinese-language directions are convenient. General fixes for polyphonic characters are in fixing polyphonic characters.

  2. English or multilingual content

Try ElevenLabs first: v4 covers 90+ languages and the English voice choice is wide.

  3. Long multi-character audiobooks

Try ElevenLabs Audiobooks first: its docs say it detects the characters in a manuscript and suggests voices, and changing one character's voice updates the whole book.

  4. Developers building on an API

Both have APIs; Fish Audio has the free s2.1-pro-free model, and S2 can be self-hosted.

  5. Cloning your own voice

Either works; clone the same clean recording on both before deciding, and get written permission before cloning anyone else.

  6. Multi-character Chinese dramas with foreign versions

Use AI Drama Voice: paste the script for automatic casting, get the same cast in nine languages, and export MP3 and SRT together. Picking languages is covered in multilingual dubbing.

Its site gives three different language counts (8 and 30+ on the homepage, 83 in the docs), which we quote with their sources. ElevenLabs details come from its pricing, text-to-speech, Audiobooks and pronunciation dictionary pages and its terms. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • For Chinese there is no single Fish Audio vs ElevenLabs answer; it depends on the voice, the model and how you mark up the text. The verifiable difference: Fish Audio's docs support tone-numbered pinyin for Chinese readings and accept Chinese directions, while ElevenLabs' dictionaries use IPA / CMU. Run the four test lines on this page on both with the same settings.

  • Its site doesn't say. Fish Audio has a Simplified Chinese site and its export-control terms don't name China, but direct access and sign-up from mainland China are not disclosed, and the experience depends on your network; for payment it names only credit and debit cards (checked 2026-11).

  • ElevenLabs has the lower entry price: Starter is $6 a month versus $15 for Fish Audio Plus. By each site's own minutes, Fish Audio Plus gives about 200 minutes a month while ElevenLabs Creator at $22 gives about 121. Both often run first-month offers, so check the pricing pages.

  • The docs say so: S2.1-Pro supports 83 languages, and the docs' language table lists Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian. Its homepage gives other counts (8, 30+), so preview your chosen voice in the target language before committing to a Thai or Vietnamese project.

  • Both can do it: Fish Audio says ten seconds of clean speech is enough and the clone works across 13 languages; ElevenLabs offers Instant cloning from Starter and Professional cloning from Creator. Testing the same recording on both is the most reliable comparison. Get consent before cloning anyone else.

  • Not on either free plan. Fish Audio's paid subscribers may use verified voices they own commercially; every ElevenLabs paid plan includes a commercial license. Also mind voice rights and AI-content labeling; see the commercial use guide.
