Which Southeast Asian country first? Five steps
The Southeast Asia short drama market is really several markets with different languages and payment habits. Work through these steps before you pick the first one.
- 01
Step 1
Separate audience size from revenue
Southeast Asia is one of the biggest regions for downloads, but downloads don't equal revenue. Indonesia produced 21% of overseas short-drama app downloads in May 2026 yet ranked 11th by revenue (DataEye). To validate content, pick a high-download market; to validate paying, look at the payment signals.
- 02
Step 2
Pick the language: one version per country
Thai for Thailand, Vietnamese for Vietnam, Indonesian for Indonesia; the Philippines' official languages are Filipino and English. AI Drama Voice produces Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and English versions but not Filipino, so test the Philippines with English first.
Tip · Indonesian and Malay aren't interchangeable; see Indonesian dubbing.

Pick several target languages at once: Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and English each get their own version, voiced by the same cast.Product screenshot - 03
Step 3
Check platforms and payment models
Verified payment signals include: the first 10 to 15 episodes free, then coins to unlock (Thailand); weekly subscriptions alongside coin top-ups (Vietnam); data bundles with telecom operators (Indonesia, Thailand); and apps that are free to watch (Melolo).
- 04
Step 4
Test one episode, dubbed and subtitled
Both approaches exist in the region: one report describes platforms using local-language dubbing in the Philippines to lower the barrier, while Thai viewers have asked in comments for Thai subtitles. Make a dubbed and a subtitled version of the same episode and decide on completion and payment data.
- 05
Step 5
Native review against a red-line checklist
Before release, have a native speaker review the full episode for titles, names and sensitive content (monarchy, religion, maps), and turn on the platform's AI label for AI-dubbed live-action dramas. The full checklist is in our short drama localization guide.

Southeast Asia short drama market notes, country by country
Thailand: a few dominant apps, and operators as a channel
A 13 July 2026 report in The Nation, citing SocialPeta, says Thailand ranked sixth worldwide for vertical-series app downloads in the first half of 2025, and operator AIS reports about 9 million customers using these apps every month. The report names ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax and GoodShort as Thailand's dominant apps, with monetisation through 10 to 15 free episodes followed by coin unlocks, weekly or monthly subscriptions, in-app ads and shoppable links. A Korea Times report in September added that AIS launched a 5G package with ReelShort.
A Thai subtitle line holds about 35 characters (tone marks and stacked vowels not counted), so slightly longer lines need two rows. The most common dubbing mistake is the sentence-final particle: female characters use ค่ะ / คะ, male characters ครับ, and getting it wrong pulls viewers out instantly. For address, use คุณ or a job title for elders and bosses, and พี่ or น้อง by age among peers. To hear Thai dubbing, visit the Thai dubbing page.
Vietnam: short-drama apps crowd the charts, pay-as-you-go dominates
VietnamNet reported on 29 September 2026 that short-drama platforms dominate the top of Vietnam's App Store free entertainment chart, including PineDrama, DramaBox and NetShort, and that most don't rely on subscriptions alone but mix weekly and monthly plans with coin top-ups. The same report cites Sensor Tower: in April 2026, users in Southeast Asia spent close to 40 minutes a day in short-drama apps.
Vietnamese pronouns are the relationship itself: lovers use anh for him and em for her, an older sister is chị, and the address can turn cold in a fight and warm again when they make up. Vietnamese viewers of Chinese dramas expect Sino-Vietnamese names and titles ('President Lu' becomes Lục tổng). Watch maps and anything territorial, too: in 2023 Vietnam banned the film Barbie over a single map. More language detail is on the Vietnamese dubbing page.

Indonesia: the biggest audience, weaker spending
DataEye's monthly data (36Kr, 15 June 2026) shows Indonesia with more than 53 million overseas short-drama app downloads in May 2026, a 21% share and the top spot, while its revenue fell out of the top ten to 11th. Sensor Tower's January 2026 report says ByteDance's Melolo leads Indonesia on both downloads and daily active users; Melolo launched in mid-November 2024 in markets including Indonesia and the Philippines and is free to watch. People's Daily also reported that Indonesia's largest telecom operator launched data bundles with FlexTV, and that local outlet IDN Times licensed Chinese micro-dramas and set up a local production unit.
Indonesia has a Muslim-majority population, so review plot points and jokes involving pork or alcohol early. For address, close friends use Kak, and juniors to seniors or staff to bosses use Pak and Bu; quarrels and lovers use aku / kamu, formal scenes saya / Anda.
The Philippines: English works, local-language dubbing helps
The 1987 Philippine constitution makes Filipino and English the official languages. The Korea Times, citing a KOFICE report, says platforms used local-language dubbing in the Philippines to lower the barrier and used highlights on Facebook and TikTok to move users into paid apps; the same piece notes strong anti-China sentiment tied to South China Sea disputes, so premises and imagery need extra care. DataEye's data puts the Philippines fourth for overseas short-drama downloads in May 2026. AI Drama Voice doesn't support Filipino yet, so an English version is the low-cost way to test the market.
Red lines shared across the region
- Maps, territory and the South China Sea in shots or lines: sensitive in both Vietnam and the Philippines
- Monarchy: Thailand's criminal code has a specific provision on insulting the monarchy, so avoid royal plots and jokes entirely
- Religion: Indonesia is majority Muslim, so review food and religion jokes
- 'Get paid to watch dramas' apps: Thai police have flagged these as scams, so never partner with or advertise on them

Five tips for taking short dramas into Southeast Asia
The most common mistake in the Southeast Asia short drama market is treating it as one market.
One version per country
Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian aren't mutually intelligible, and Indonesian can't simply be reused for Malaysian viewers. Make each country its own version.
One cast across three languages
When releasing in several countries, tick Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian together in AI Drama Voice; each character keeps the same voice in all three.
Test before you roll out
Run one series in one country for completion and payment, then copy it to the next. It's much easier to tell whether a problem is the content or the localization.
Study operators and free models
Indonesia and Thailand both have operator bundles, and Melolo runs free-to-watch. Place the paywall episode to suit local paying habits.
Quote only sourced figures
Market data for the region comes from many sources with different methods. Name the firm, date and method when you quote, and never stitch numbers from different sources together.
Frequently asked questions
Public reports mention ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax and GoodShort (dominant in Thailand), PineDrama, DramaBox and NetShort (near the top of Vietnam's App Store chart), and Melolo and FlexTV (Indonesia); TikTok and Facebook are key channels for pulling viewers in. Sources and dates are in the comparison table (checked 2026-11).
Within the Southeast Asia short drama market, Indonesia is the biggest audience with relatively weak spending. DataEye data shows Indonesia produced 21% of overseas short-drama app downloads in May 2026, first on downloads but 11th on revenue; Melolo leads on downloads and daily users, and operator bundles exist. Indonesia suits validating content first and finding the paywall later.
We found no genre statistics specific to Thailand. Region-wide reporting mentions affairs, family secrets, power struggles in wealthy families, revenge and rebirth as common premises, with urban romance, family drama and fantasy suspense also popular (Korea Times 2026-09-11, People's Daily 2026-01). Check your target platform's Thai charts before choosing a premise.
It depends on what you want to validate in the Southeast Asia short drama market. For content and reach, Indonesia has the most downloads; Thailand has a few dominant apps, operator channels and clear payment models; Vietnam's charts are full of short-drama apps with pay-as-you-go plans; the Philippines can be tested cheaply with an English version. Open one country at a time.
Both have an audience: a report describes platforms dubbing into local languages in the Philippines, while Thai viewers have asked for Thai subtitles. Test a dubbed and a subtitled version of the same episode. AI Drama Voice exports the dubbed MP3 and a line-timed SRT in one go, so both versions can be prepared together.
